Frequency of binge eating in medication adherent patients with ADHD and its relation to impulsivity

Abstract Background People with ADHD might have a higher likelihood of engaging in binge eating behaviors. Research has shown a connection between impulsivity and both ADHD and binge eating, yet the exact relationship between these factors is still not fully understood, with research on the topic being sparse and at times inconsistent. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of binge eating in medication-adherent patients with ADHD and to investigate whether impulsivity plays a role in the observed connection between ADHD and binge eating. Patients and methods A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the Okasha Institute of Psychiatry in Cairo, Egypt, including 75 patients diagnosed with ADHD according to DSM-IV criteria. Participants were assessed using the K-SADS PL, Conner’s Parent Rating Scale-revised, and screened for binge eating behaviors using the Binge Eating Scale (BES). Impulsivity was measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS). Results The main findings of this study revealed that 9.3% of the participants had binge eating problems. However, binge eating was not significantly associated with the Conners subscales or types of ADHD. Importantly, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between binge eating and impulsivity scores, with a P -value of ≤ 0.001. Conclusion Binge eating is common among adolescents with ADHD, and impulsivity is likely a contributing factor. Mental health professionals should consider these insights when offering suitable interventions for those affected.
