AYURVEDIC THERAPEUTICS IN LIVER DISEASE
View through CrossRef
The liver (Yakrit) is recognized in Ayurveda as a vital organ intimately associated with Rakta Dhatu, Pitta Dosha, and metabolic homeostasis. Although classical Ayurvedic texts do not describe liver diseases as a distinct nosological category, various disorders such as Kamala, Pandu, Halimaka, Yakrit vikara and Yakritudar encompass pathological conditions affecting hepatic structure and function. This chapter explores the Ayurvedic concept of Yakrit, its physiological significance, and the etiopathogenesis (Samprapti) of Yakrit Vikara through the lens of dysfunction in Dosha, Dhatu, Agni, and Srotas. The pathogenesis of liver disorders is discussed with particular emphasis on Pitta Dushti, Rakta vitiation, Mandagni, and obstruction of Rasavaha and Raktavaha Srotas.
The chapter further examines the clinical correlation of classical Ayurvedic disease entities with contemporary hepatological conditions, including hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cholestatic disorders, cirrhosis, and hepatomegaly. Principles of Ayurvedic management are elaborated on the basis of Nidana Parivarjana, Agni Deepana, Ama Pachana, Shodhana therapies, and Rasayana interventions, aimed at restoring hepatic function and systemic balance. A detailed discussion is provided on Pathya-Apathya (dietary and lifestyle regulations) that are essential for the prevention and management of liver disorders. Additionally, the chapter reviews important classical formulations described in Ayurvedic literature, as well as contemporary proprietary and evidence-based herbal preparations used in clinical practice. By integrating traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with modern hepatological understanding, this chapter offers a comprehensive framework for the holistic management of liver diseases and highlights the potential role of Ayurveda in promoting hepatic health and improving patient outcomes.
