The Logic of History

Chapter 5 analyzes Lincoln’s challenge to Stephen Douglas, which included their famous Senate contest of 1858. Their debates, more than anything else, were about history. In these speeches, Lincoln argued that Douglas and his supporters were making war on the past in order to justify their political and financial interests in the present. While this chapter carefully assesses the evidentiary record for Lincoln’s historical claims, much of it explores how effectively Lincoln was shaping the collective memory in this campaign.
