Alberts Spoģis devies mūžībā

The note commemorates poet, philosopher, teacher, and public intellectual Alberts Spoģis (1924–2020), who passed away on 15 March 2020. A long‑time educator at the Latvian Gymnasium in Münster, Spoģis profoundly shaped generations of Latvian émigré youth by teaching history, philosophy, politics, and Catholic studies, as well as organizing influential political seminars for students. His journalistic legacy comprises more than 700 publications across various Latvian exile periodicals, including work as editor of Akadēmiskā Dzīve, Gaisma, Kara invalīds, Dzeive, and as a contributor to Radio Free Europe’s Latgalian broadcasts. A key advocate of Latgalian cultural preservation, Spoģis collaborated closely with publisher Vladislavs Lōcis to disseminate Latgalian literature in post‑independence Latvia. The article highlights Spoģis as a cultural bridge‑builder between Latvia and its diaspora, a dedicated interpreter of philosophical thought, and a guardian of Latgalian identity. His memory endures among former students of the Münster Latvian Gymnasium, as well as within Latvian and Latgalian communities worldwide.
