The British Colonization and its Impacts on Baloch Tribalism.(1877-1947)

View through CrossRef
In this research, the British colonization of Balochistan from 1876 to 1947 is examined as its effect on Baloch tribalism was both profound and lasting. The British Rule in Balochistan was marked by a network of a tangled Treaties, Military Intervention and the pattern of administrative restructuring, which changed the socio-political fabric of the region. This study systematically evaluates the triadic destruction of tribal autonomy, complete with the introduction of new governance mechanisms that essentially served the British interests through a rigorous analysis of primary and secondary sources, including features that are attributed to seminal works by T.A. Heathcote, Naseer Dashti and other notable historians. The colonial administration based its heavy dependence on the manipulation of tribal chiefs to maintain indirect rule system, which had the effect of institutionalizing divisions within Baloch society and in the long run served to produce political instability. Additionally, traditional Baloch livelihoods were disrupted by British economic policies and Baloch communities were compelled to find themselves in patterns of dependent economic life that endured after colonialism. It also takes a look at the continuous resistance movements undertaken by the powerful Baloch leaders including Nawab Mehrab Khan, Sardar Khair Bakhsh Marri and Sardar Akbar Bugti, against colonial rule. The eventual integration of Balochistan into Pakistan in 1948, despite strong opposition from the Khan of Kalat and other tribal leaders, highlights the long-term consequences of British policies in the region. This study has made a significant contribution to understanding the colonial legacies in this context because it has done so much to show the endurance of its effects on tribal identities, regional politics and governance challenges in the current time
