Learning the Trade at the Plantin Press

Abstract This article reconstructs the apprenticeship and education of Balthasar Moretus  III (1646–1696) at the seventeenth-century Plantin Press in Antwerp, demonstrating how knowledge and skills were transferred within an early modern family business in the book trade. Drawing on the exceptionally rich Plantin-Moretus Archives, the study traces Balthasar’s combined social, linguistic, and vocational training orchestrated by his parents, Balthasar Moretus  II and Anna Goos. Formal schooling and extended stays in Paris and Italy were interspersed with workplace learning at the Officina Plantiniana to foster managerial expertise. Beginning with observational duties in the printing workshop, Balthasar gradually assumed responsibilities in correspondence, accounting, wage administration, and cash management. The case illustrates how experiential knowledge transfer within the family context – rather than guild-regulated apprenticeships – shaped succession in printing households. It also highlights the strategic integration of social refinement and business training to prepare heirs for leadership in an internationally oriented book trade.
