The Role of Green Training and Development in Enhancing Organizational Citizenship Behaviour for the Environment: A Systematic Literature Review

This systematic literature review (SLR) examined the relationship between Green Training and Development (GTD) and Organizational Citizenship Behaviour for the Environment (OCBE), drawing insights from 35 peer-reviewed articles from 2020 to 2024. As a fundamental component of organizational sustainability strategies, GTD provides employees with the competencies and motivation to engage in voluntary pro-environmental behaviours, fostering OCBE. The review utilized Scopus and Web of Science databases, following the PRISMA framework to systematically identify, screen, and analyse eligible studies. The results show a strong positive relationship between GTD and OCBE, mediated by factors such as green organizational support and psychological green climate, and moderated by variables like perceived organizational support and environmental values. In high-impact sectors like manufacturing and hospitality, GTD boosted OCBE, yet no significant relation existed in sectors with low impact, such as SMEs. The analysis of the outcomes underscores the essential importance of leadership, tailored training programs, and supportive organizational climates in maximizing GTD’s impact on OCBE. The review concludes that GTD is a pivotal driver of OCBE, with implications for theory and practice in sustainability-focused HR strategies. Addressing identified gaps will enhance the understanding and application of GTD in fostering environmental behaviours across diverse organizational contexts. This study forms a basis for future studies and practice recommendations for integrating GTD in frameworks for organizational sustainability.
