The Truths of Kitsch

Beauty and ugliness are closely related, whereas kitsch de-demonizes life. Characteristically it unduly prolongs moments of harmony and therefore it is often felt as sticky and obtrusive. The essay investigates aesthetic issues and psychodynamic processes taking effect when kitsch is produced and perceived. In art therapy one is often faced with kitsch because under the pressure of inner conflicts patients tend to shun the expression of misery and pain by finding all kinds of aesthetic solutions. The question is discussed if kitsch can be understood as a statement of saccharine pain or denied truths and thus serves as a defence, or if it can be viewed as a necessary means for further aesthetic and psychic development - culminating in powerful artistic statements.
