painting (oil): ["Major Oak, Sherwood Forest"]

View through Europeana Collections
Central to the picture is a tree with massive trunk and spreading branches. The tree is completely leafless but the artist has detailed the structure of the branches in great detail. In the background a warm orangey coloured sky, with blue nearer ground level. The foreground is less detailed, suggesting muddy ground and puddles with thin trunks of trees hinted at. Close examination of the branches to the right of the picture reveals a small outline face, profile, facing left, wearing a hat, elfin-like - discovered by Dian Hall during conservation of the work.
