A coastal scene with figures. In the right foreground of the picture sit a man, a woman, and two children. The man wears a sou'wester hat, and sits on a coil of rope, leaning against a basket of fish. He is carving a boat from a piece of wood. The young blonde child leans on his leg, watching him intently. The woman, in a red-black headscarf, stops her net mending, and leans over to watch the man. On her lap is an infant. To the side of the figures, on the left foreground, is an overturned toy cart and a wooden 'peg doll'. Behind the figures is a causeway leading down to the water's edge. At the top of this are two rowing boats, with the small figure of a fisherman nearby. In the middle ground is a huge point of rock colonised by sea birds; at the side of it is a pathway, which a figure with a basket ascends.
