ANCIENT PHYTOLITIC PHOSPHORITES OF THE KHUBSUGUL BASIN

Algal organics played an important role in initiating phosphate sedimentation in ancient sea basins. The phosphatic phytoliths generally appear as hardly identified stratiform stromatolites or oolite-like oncolites, due to which algal phosphorites have long regarded to be exotic. Fractions of phosphatized mats having been broken synsedimentarily make up groundmass of so-called pellet (fine-granular) “sheet” phosphorites. Algal structures in the Lower Cambrian phosphorites in the Khubsugul Basin, Mongolia are described.
