Adam Clayton Powell Jr.: “Black Power: A Form of Godly Power”

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was a powerful voice within the Democratic Party and also was an advocate for civil rights. He appealed to President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 to support the Montgomery Bus Boycott and contributed to the Montgomery Improvement Association as well. His close relationship with Martin Luther King Jr. unraveled when he did not support King’s decision to demonstrate at the Democratic National Convention in 1960. Powell spoke out against King’s belief in civil disobedience in 1968 when he said, “The day of Martin Luther King has come to an end.” King was assassinated less than two weeks later.
