The second longest running play in the history of the English theatre . That honour goes to Agatha Christie's comedy- thriller ' The Mousetrap ' which is in its fifth year at the Ambassador's theatre. This play , by beating the 1,745 performances if ' Worm's Eye View ' , has only to outstrip ' Blithe Spirit ' to head the longest - running of them all list . Since ' The Mousetrap ' originally opened on November 25, 1952 , the entire cast has changed . Patrick Doonan took over the lead from Richard Attenborough in July , 1954, and recently completed his 1,000th performance . The leading lady ladies who succeeded Sheila Sim were Jean Harvey , Marguerite stone and Heather Stannard . PICTURE SHOWS:- ...'
