Byas moves to the West Coast as part of a band led by trombonist Bert Johnson. He moves to the better-known band of Lionel Hampton and begins to attract attention in the entertainment press. Byas transitions from alto sax to tenor for reasons that differ in various accounts. During this period he also meets Art Tatum, perhaps the greatest jazz pianist of all time, and strikes up a relationship with him that will influence his playing tremendously. He plays with a number of lesser-known groups, then is hired by Eddie Mallory, a horn player who backed big-name singer Ethel Waters, and it is with this group that he will make his way to New York.
