This chapter examines Abbas Kiarostami’s leadership legacy from two interrelated perspectives: as an Iranian filmmaker and a Muslim humanist. Around both these identities, Kiarostami’s life and work offer valuable lessons to educators for examining and teaching about contemporary challenges and dilemmas facing Muslim artists and intellectuals in contemporary Muslim-majority nation-states. This chapter will focus on Kiarostami’s contributions, particularly in post-1979 Iran, to new ways of thinking about and responding to the questions “What is Iranian Cinema?” and “What is Islamic Cinema?”
