Cotton pencil skirt with geometric pattern

To the colors of this cloth one can speak of a kain soga in this pencil skirt. The badan (body) consists of wide diagonal strips filled with a parang variety, parang rusak or birong. The parang motif is one of the so-called forbidden motifs. These motifs were forbidden by the sultans of Yogya and Solo for ordinary citizens to wear. Parang means (small) sword, and symbolizes power and growth (McCabe Elliot, 1984:68).
