Cotton pencil skirt with geometric pattern

This sarong is most likely made to order for a tall person, because before batik, a cotton strip was sewn to the fabric width by hand.\ The pattern is a kawung variation. The kawung belongs to the so-called forbidden motifs, which were declared royal symbols by the sultans of Central Java in the 18th century, and were therefore forbidden to the common people (McCabe Elliot, 1984:68).
