Abstract
Attempting a reading of the Analects informed by a single “historical Confucius” is complicated by the diversity of images of Confucius accepted at different times. Those who think they know Confucius from the biographical details supplied in one or more of the works connected with him, from hagiographical accounts of his exemplary behavior learned at school in Taiwan or Singapore, or from the slightly nonsensical aphorisms attributed to him by patronizing Hollywood screenwriters, are at best only right in a partial sense.
