Historical anthropology in this context refers to the research efforts by German-language philosophers, psychoanalysts, literature and cultural researchers who seek to integrate prior work by Lacan, Bataille and Barthes et. al. on the one hand and the English social anthropologists on the other hand into a theory that illuminates all traces of laughter and sorrow.
