The signature, on the basin just above the water surface, is damaged. It was previously interpreted as Z. Bernaer, described as a Dutch artist working around 1700. However, there is no artist with that name registered and the style of the painting suggests an advent later in the 1700s. According to information in a photo (RKD), the painting is a work by J. H. Bernards, a Dutch artist active around 1750. It is a copy after a composition by Jean Raoux, known by a painting, signed and dated 1719, in Neues Palais, Potsdam (Potsdam 1935, No. 206). In the Hallwylska painting, the composition is mirror-turned and, probably, Bernards copied from a print after Raoux.
