Rin Rin y Chanchito. La dimensión de sus imágenes. Dos revistas infantiles de ideologías antagónicas publicadas durante la década de los treinta en Colombia

Chanchito. Illustrated magazine for children (1933-1934) and Rin Rin. Children's magazine of the Ministry of Education (1935-1939), children’s magazines of Colombia, spread the love for motherland in the hearts of children and shared the renewed educational spirit of the New School pedagogies. Although there was not a great time difference between the publications, Chanchito and Rin Rin as political devices disseminated in their pages dissimilar models of citizenship. Chanchito, a private magazine for urban children headed by Victor Caro, believed that the family and the church were educational institutions to train the future citizen with traditional, devout and obedient values. Rin Rin, as school material for public schools of the Ministry of Education, had the objective of constructing a type of modern citizen for democracy through a school-mediated education according to the political principles of the State promoted by Alfonso López Pumarejo and his “Marching Revolution” (1934-1938). The major differences on the model of child and citizen between both magazines were transmitted through the images. In Chanchito the children are white and their clothes reminisce to the traditional European costumes; the girl, and future mother, is selfless. In Rin Rin there is a local multi-ethnic catalog, sometimes the clothes refer to the regional reality, sometimes to the new modern European fashions; girls and women are free and literate beings. The battle to shape the citizen model from antagonistic angles was the cause of fierce belligerence.
