Indriya Pradoṣaja Vikāra

View through CrossRef
Indriya Pradoṣaja Vikāra comprises disorders arising from improper interaction between the sense organs and their respective objects. Āyurveda explains perception through the coordinated contact of Ātman, Manas, Indriya, and Indriyārtha, while health depends upon Samyagyoga—appropriate sensory use. Atiyoga, Ayoga, and Mithyāyoga of sensory stimuli, together with Prajñāparādha, Pariṇāma, Doṣa Prakopa, and local Srotoduṣṭi, may disturb the five Jñānendriyas: Śrotra, Tvak, Cakṣus, Rasanā, and Ghrāṇa. The affected organ may develop Upatāpa, representing partial or altered function, or Upaghāta, representing severe or complete functional loss. This chapter reviews the Nirukti and definitions of Indriya and Vikāra, Pañcamahābhūta predominance, causative factors, Samprāpti, Samprāpti Ghaṭaka, the distinction between Upatāpa and Upaghāta, illustrative sensory disorders, diagnosis, and preventive and therapeutic measures. The framework is relevant to excessive screen exposure, loud sound, artificial lighting, chemical irritants, sensory deprivation, and other forms of inappropriate sensory use, while requiring organ-specific examination and timely referral. Keywords: Indriya Pradoṣaja Vikāra, Jñānendriya, Asātmyendriyārtha Saṃyoga, Atiyoga, Ayoga, Mithyāyoga, Samyagyoga, Upatāpa, Upaghāta, Prajñāparādha, Doṣa Prakopa, Srotoduṣṭi, Sensory Disorders, Āyurveda.
