The Messel Pit (Germany) is famous for the quality of preservation of its fossils. To date, eight primate specimens dating to the early Middle Eocene, 47.6–47.8 million years ago, have been found. They all belong to the Cercamoniinae, a subfamily of the adapiform family Notharctidae.
Europolemur koenigswaldi
and
Europolemur kelleri
are represented by partial skeletons, and
Darwinius masillae
by a complete skeleton, soft tissue, and digestive tract contents.
