H alobacteria

Abstract Ha.lo.bac.te'ri.a. N.L. neut. n. Halobacterium the type genus of the order; ‐ ia ending to denote an order; N.L. neut. pl. n. Halobacteria the class of Halobacterium . The class Halobacteria consists of three orders and six families: the Halobacteriales with families Halobacteriaceae , Haloarculaceae , and Halococcaceae ; the Haloferacales with families Haloferacaceae and Halorubraceae ; and the Natrialbales with the family Natrialbaceae . As of April 2016, the class contained 52 genera and 215 species. They are extremely halophilic Archaea, generally neutrophilic or alkaliphilic, and mostly red‐pink pigmented. Nearly all species lead an aerobic life style.
