Being Grateful

Nurses face difficulties. Nurses make mistakes. Nurses deal with challenging situations. All this can focus nurses on that which is not good. However, being grateful brings one into the presence of the good of the work of nursing, into the goodness of being a nurse. Being grateful shifts one’s focus off that which is not good and makes one aware of that which is good. Being grateful focuses nurses’ vision on patients’ aliveness, thus allowing nurses to do what is necessary to promote patients’ aliveness. When one is grateful, one is brought into the presence of the good that there is in the world. Being grateful is practicing the habit of presence.
