Respiratory Infections of the Cat: A Serological Survey in Different Populations
View through CrossRef
SummaryEpidemiological studies in cats of Switzerland gave different results as to the frequency of agents involved in respiratory infections depending on the housing conditions of the cats. Much higher percentages of sera contained antibodies against feline herpesviruses and Chlamydia psittaci in cats of a closed conventional breeding colony (89.5% and 32%) than in pet cats (19% and 5%). Antibodies against reovirus types 1 and 2 and against feline syncytial forming virus could not be traced in the conventional breeding colony but were recovered in pet cats (12%, 17%, and 19%, respectively). The prevalence of antibodies against feline calicivirus and reovirus type 3 was similar in the conventional breeding colony (100% and 68%) and in the pet cats (93.5% and 72%). None of the agents mentioned were found in cats of a closed specific pathogen free colony.
