Los Pintores Prehispanicos / The Pre-hispanic Painters
View through CrossRef
This work analyses the pictorial legacy of pre-Hispanic artists through a careful revision of historical texts and a microscopical analysis of the paintings and their pigments. This work can be considered as a companion to the books “Arte Indocristiano”, “El Pintor de Conventos” and “De Bonampak al Templo Mayor. El azul maya en Mesoamérica”. The first two analysed the sculpture and mural paintings of convents and churches of Colonial Mexico whilst the third focused on the fascinating maya blue pigment, its chemical composition and the actual recipe that can be used to reproduce this colour. This book now focuses on the period before the Spanish conquest. What was the influence of religion and education of the Aztec, and how did this permeate the works of art that have survived since? What materials were used? Which colours are present in different archaeological sites? This text attempts to answer these and many other questions.
