Atonement and Retributive Justice

This chapter discusses the similarities and dissimilarities between Latter-day Saint and Calvinist atonement theories. The questions it addresses include: the bases for retributive justice as atonement theology; how they are manifest in the American penal system; how language affects past and contemporary understanding of atonement; whether a change in language would facilitate a movement toward a more optimistic view of atonement; given these shifts in language, is it possible to create a theology that eventuates in universal Zion in lieu of global apocalypse?
