Successful festivals generate income for small towns. However, growing visitor numbers put stresses on local accommodation. Short-duration homestays have enabled the small Australian country town of Parkes to accommodate locally many more visitors at the annual Elvis Festival. A third
of formal accommodation is home hosted. Hosts are both short-term friends and entrepreneurs. Visitor income remains in town, and host and visitors strengthen their links with the Festival. Event home hosting shares the benefits experienced in long-term home hosting, income and social diversity,
and fewer disadvantages – disruption of home life and longer-term commitment. The home hosting model has subsequently spread in New South Wales.
