<b>Dutch Abstract:</b> Vaak wordt gesteld, dat grote ondernemingen een overheersende invloed hebben op de wetenschap. In het nieuwe universitaire vakgebied Wetenschap en Samenleving wordt deze invloed onderzocht. Met dit boek publiceert de SUA de resultaten van één van de eerste afgeronde studies op dit gebied.<br><br>Het gaat over ‘natuurkunde’ en Philips.In het eerste deel wordt beschreven, hoe Philips vanaf de oprichting van het eigen Natuurkundig Laboratorium in 1914 de leiding heeft genomen in de ontwikkeling van de zogenaamde vaste-stof fysica in Nederland. Hoe de universitaire en industriële fysicabeoefening verweven zijn geraakt, wordt met een zogenaamd dubbelfunktieonderzoek onder researchmanagers geïllustreerd.<br><br>In het tweede deel komen deze onderzoekers zelf uitvoerig aan het woord. Over uiteenlopende onderwerpen zoals wetenschapsbeleid, methodologie, maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid en maatschappelijke relevantie werden Philipsmedewerkers en universitaire natuurkundigen geïnterviewd. De opmerkelijke verschillen tussen deze twee groepen worden behandeld in hun sociale kontekst. Maakt het uit voor welke baas je werkt? Ook de opleiding tot natuurkundige en de vermaatschappelijking daarvan komen aan de orde.<br><br>Behalve een veelheid aan empirisch materiaal en citaten bevat het boek ook een theoretische inleiding en de relaties tussen kennisproduktie en warenproduktie, tussen hoofd- en handenarbeid, tussen het wetenschapsbedrijf en het grootste fabriekssysteem in Nederland, Philips. In een nabeschouwing benadrukken de schrijvers het belang van samenwerking met de vakbeweging bij dit soort onderzoek.<br><br><b>English Abstract:</b> This book is the outcome of a "Science and Society" project by staff and students at the University of Amsterdam (Department of Philosophy) during the study year 1976-’77 about the role of Philips in the intellectual and social organization of solid-state physics in the Netherlands. The first part describes how Philips, from the establishment of its own Physics Laboratory in 1914, has taken the lead in the development of solid state physics in the Netherlands. How the university and industrial physics practice have become entwined is illustrated with a so-called double-function study among university professors and research managers.<br><br>Philips employees and university physicists working in approximately the same domain were interviewed on a variety of topics such as science policy, methodology, social responsibility and social relevance. The significant differences are explained in terms of the different social context. Also the training to become a physicist and the socialization thereof are discussed.<br><br>In addition to a multitude of empirical materials and quotes, the book also contains a theoretical introduction into the relationships between knowledge production and industrial production, between main and manual labor, between the knowledge-based company and the largest factory system in the Netherlands, Philips. The authors signal that trade-unions hardly play a role in the knowledge dynamics of the political economy.
