Abstract
This chapter attempts to formulate some working hypotheses about the nature of case and agreement, particularly in nonfinite structures, within the Minimalist Program of the Principles and Parameters framework.1The theory of case developed by Sch ü tze (1997) is reviewed and substantially adopted as a working hypothesis. The Case Filter requires only that a Determiner Phrase(DP) receive case, but movement in Icelandic shows that quirky subjects have the same licensing requirements as DPs with structural case. Therefore, (i) as a parameter, movement is to check licensing, not(also) case features; and(ii) syntactic Case (structural licensing) and morphological case (m-case) are independent.
