The Pelican and the Passion: Unveiling Sacred Symbols in Medieval Christian Literature
View through CrossRef
The essence of spirituality in European medieval texts preserve profound meaning, where religion permeates all aspects of life; shaping politics, culture, education, and social customs. Within the framework of Christian symbolic literature and art, animals carry emblematic meaning. Likewise, the Pelican denotes ‘sacrifice’ in Christian art, where it pierces its chest to feed its young of its blood. Thus, the Pelican resembled Christ and his ‘sacrifice for man.’ Moreover, it is linked to Christ’s love for religious devotion, resurrection, and redemption. Therefore, the pelican’s symbol began to appear in church decorations, Eucharistic vessels, and manuscript illustrations, which highlights its significance in medieval Christian iconography. However, its transition from classical zoological intercepts to metaphorical renditions in Christian theology remains unexplored. Moreover, the pelican's self-sacrificial trait is widely accepted, however, the process through which it garnered importance in Christian literacy also remains unexplained. Therefore, this article investigates the symbolic elucidation of the Pelican in Christian medieval texts, representing Christ's passion, sacrifice, death, and resurrection. A thorough analysis of the Bible, Physiologus, the Aberdeen Bestiary, and the religious writings of Seville’s Saint Augustine, Saint Ambrose, and Saint Isidore helps examine the literary adaptation in the medieval era, where ancient animals bore symbolic interpretations for devoutness and self-sacrifice. Under religious implications, this research assesses the Pelican’s theological significance in symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice. The comparison between literary, theological, and emblematic analysis helps dissect perspectives that comprehend animal symbolism in Christian medieval history.
