View through Europeana Collections
Sannō Matsuri is an annual Shinto festival held in June and the procession is called Shinkosai. The role of this ritual is to communicate with the gods, or kami, consisting of the purification by a priest before interacting with the gods Shinto and is done by splashing with water or with the wand of the priest on which the talismans of paper are caught. The highlight of the festival is the procession of portable altars, mikoshi and is characterized by the Edo period (1603-1868), on which occasion we celebrated the leaders of the city, allowing the shogun to enter through the grand gate of Edo Castle. On the car is a shaman, dressed in traditional costume, representing Leul Shishi, considered to have supernatural powers, and later to perform a ritual shinto dance, of Leo, called Shishimai, accompanied by taiko drums. The procession began at dawn and ended in the evening
