Abstract The first Spanish dramatist who succeeded in creating a musico-dramatic genre that combined with baroque exhuberance the Italianate visual effects with the dramatic intensity of the comedia, and exploited the affective and associative potential of contemporary Spanish music was Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-81).
