Cozinha viva na casa de A menina morta
View through CrossRef
This essay investigates the concept of the “living kitchen” as a central interpretive key to understanding Cornélio Penna’s novel A menina morta (1954), analyzing it as a critical counterpoint to the spectral and decadent world of the slave-holding plantation house. Through an interartistic analysis that connects the novel to Penna’s drawing “Banquete” (1924), the essay demonstrates how the author’s pictorial sensibility–his melancholic palette and symbolic composition–also informs the narrative. The study identifies a systematic erasure of savory foods from family meals, contrasting it with detailed descriptions of sweets and the sensory vitality of the kitchen. Interpreted as an energetic pole of the narrative, the “living kitchen” is a space of heat, sound, and heterogeneous community, where subjectivities emerge and social tensions manifest. Based on the interface between the absence and presence of food, the article concludes that Penna converts the domestic scene into a device to problematize the family ritual at the table, read as a metonymy for the idealized social communion of official Brazilian history.
