Jealousy in Interpersonal Communication

AbstractJealousy is an interactive experience involving attempts to protect a valued interpersonal relationship from the real or perceived threat of a rival. The three interrelated components of the jealousy experience are cognitions, emotions, and behaviors. The expression of jealousy falls under the behavioral jealousy component and includes 11 communicative responses to jealousy. Jealousy expression has been studied in romantic and family relationships, same‐ and cross‐sex friendships, and in face‐to‐face and mediated settings. Psychology and interpersonal communication theories have been applied to understanding how jealousy is expressed, and interpersonal communication researchers are developing and testing jealousy expression‐specific models and theories.
