AbstractIn 18BCE, Augustus, the first Roman emperor, passed thelex Iulia de maritandis ordinibus, the “law about the social orders marrying.” Later jurists conflated this with alaw that subsequently refined and completed it, thelex Papia Poppaea, sponsored by consuls of 9CE. The two came to be known as thelex Iuliaandlex Papia. Together they created asystem of rewards for married persons and parents and penalties for the unwed and childless that remained in effect for over two centuries.
