STRATEGY OF POLITENESS IN WRITING: APPLICATION OF LEECH (1983), GRICE (1975) & ASMAH (1996 & 2000) MODELS

Language politeness becomes the catalyst for the formation of a person's personality in the eyes of the general public as well as related to professionalism. However, the aspect of politeness is often underestimated by some parties in communicating. If reviewed, each individual is required to be prudent in communication in order not to undermine the facial of any party thereby avoiding conflicts whether in verbal or written communication. Politeness Writing strategy includes the application and selection of words, phrases and grammatical sentences in the quest to politely attract readers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the language politeness strategy in the article of Ruangan Agenda Bahasa in the Dewan Bahasa Majalah magazine for July 2011 issue. This study applies three models of politeness, namely PS Leech (1983), PK Grice (1975) and Asmah Omar (2000). This study is a complete qualitative study by focusing on text analysis. The findings show the application of three models of politeness, namely PS Leech, PK Grice and Asmah Omar Politeness Models that form the combination of maxims pattern + strategies. ARPBM demonstrates compliance to maxim of Tact + Approbation + Quality + Relevant + Compliance on Title + Dignity. The findings demonstrate the application of suggestion, advice, praise, fact-stating, usage of metaphorical elements, compliance to title and dignity strategies in the writer's efforts to sustain politeness writing. The findings reflect that the author complies with writing rules by not neglecting the language politeness strategy. In conclusion, compliance with the aspect of politeness writing reflects that the author’s academic manifestation of his professional attitudes in maintaining politeness culture in communication.
