Lifting Congo’s Resource Curse: Initiatives by the International Community
View through CrossRef
This paper examines the complex phenomenon of the resource curse, with a particular focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its paradoxical experience with natural resource abundance, conflict, and economic stagnation. Through an analysis of scholarly literature and empirical evidence, the paper explores how the resource curse theory resonates with the DRC's situation, underscoring the failure of the country to translate its vast natural wealth into tangible economic and social development. The study investigates the role of natural resources in enabling conflict, contributing to authoritarian governance, and hindering economic growth.<br>The study also examines international initiatives aimed at addressing the resource curse, such as the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and evaluates their applicability and effectiveness in the context of the DRC. Furthermore, the paper examines the specific case of conflict minerals, particularly tantalum, tin, tungsten, and gold, in the eastern province of the DRC, analyzing their role in fueling violence and human rights abuses. Drawing on existing research and empirical data, the paper identifies both the limitations and successes of international efforts to mitigate the resource curse in the DRC and offers recommendations for future action. It underscores the importance of addressing institutional weaknesses, promoting transparency and accountability, and empowering local communities to ensure equitable benefit-sharing from natural resource extraction. Ultimately, the paper advocates for a comprehensive approach that combines regulatory frameworks, community engagement, and international cooperation to break the cycle of resource curse in the DRC and other resource-rich countries.
