POST MEDIEVAL JEWELLERY
View through Europeana Collections
A roughly cut piece of clear glass within a circular lead alloy setting, now distorted in shape. The setting has a scalloped lower edge and is indented before widening to form a collar around the glass. The reverse is enclosed with a slight central ridge, suggesting a possible area for attachment to form a button, cufflink or possibly a finger ring bezel. This object could date from the seventeenth century although the uneven shape of the cabochon also resembles earlier medieval examples.
