Matthias

The depiction of the apostle Matthias forms the thirteenth leaf of the episode “Christ, the Twelve Apostles and Saint Paul,” which precedes Christ’s leaf as a blessing Salvator. In contrast to the depiction of Christ, the apostles are not signed and similar in the picture. The saints' figures stand between floral pattern barefoot on bare ground and they are given the corresponding attribute. This is Saint Matthias, who turns to the right, moves forward and holds the short stalked Beil with both hands. It is depicted with longer hair under a headgear and short beard, its head accentuated with a plate bus and its view is directed towards the Beil. On both sides, the tendrils flow into peonies, leaves and flowers, which turn towards the head of the apostle. The eight-edition episode was completed at the latest 1515 (cf. Jahn 1955, p. 53).
