The first novels of Velma Pollard Erna Brodber both take place primarily during the 1970s in Jamaica, soon after Jamaican Independence in 1962. Michael Manley had just become Prime Minister in 1972. The Rastafarians were popular, and the popularity of Reggae music spiked, especially with the global icon Bob Marley. Furthermore, the nation’s intelligentsia were consumed with the question of what the newly independent nation would become. Both writers’ early novels are consumed with these matters, while they are also about a young person’s coming to maturity.
