The Nehemiah Autobiographical Memoir

Abstract
Towards the beginning of his massive History of Autobiography in Antiquity, Georg Misch defined his topic as ‘the history of human self-awareness’. The definition, which no doubt owed something to the influence of his father-in- law Wilhelm Dilthey, would certainly apply to Augustine’s Confessions, often taken to be the first specimen of the genre. In spite of his definition, however, Misch notes that Augustine represents a terminus rather than a beginning and, true to his word, reaches him only on page 625 of his history.
