Staminate: Pistillate Flower Ratio Best Suited to the Production of Gynoecious Hybrid Cucumbers for Machine Harvest.1

Abstract
Pickling cucumber yields and dollar value returns per acre were highest in isolated plots which produced 26% and 33% staminate flowers during the first 15 days of flowering. This flowering pattern was obtained by planting a seed blend of 90% gynoecious hybrid and 10% monoecious cultivar. Honey bees provided necessary pollination activity. Commercial gynoecious hybrids tested exceeded the desirable staminate: pistillate flower ratio without the necessity of blending seed of a monoecious cultivar. The proportion of staminate flowers increased with plant age.
