View through CrossRef
BACKGROUND: The scientific development of yoga during the twentieth century was shaped by several pioneering researchers who successfully integrated traditional yogic knowledge with modern medical science. Among the most influential was Dr. Mukund Vinayak Bhole (1935–2021), physician, physiologist, yoga researcher, and former Research Director of Kaivalyadhama, the world's first yoga research institute. His investigations into pranayama, yoga physiology, and yoga therapy contributed substantially to the establishment of evidence-based yoga and the development of modern therapeutic applications.
AIM: To review the life, scientific achievements, research contributions, and educational legacy of Dr. Mukund V. Bhole, with particular emphasis on his work in pranayama, yoga therapy, and the integration of traditional yogic principles with modern biomedical science.
METHODS: A narrative historical review was conducted using published books, scientific articles, institutional documents, online archives, and selected publications authored by Dr. Bhole. The review examined his academic career, laboratory and clinical research, therapeutic concepts, educational programs, and selected scientific papers on pranayama and yoga therapy. Personal observations from scientific meetings and professional interactions with Dr. Bhole were also incorporated to provide historical context.
RESULTS: Dr. Bhole made outstanding contributions to modern yoga research through physiological investigations of yogic practices, development of the Bhole Approach (Anubhava) to yoga therapy, and integration of classical yogic concepts with contemporary anatomy and physiology. His research explored the physiological effects of asanas, pranayama, kriyas, bandhas, meditation, and mantra practices using modern clinical and laboratory methods. He developed educational programs and therapeutic protocols for conditions including bronchial asthma, hypertension, diabetes, chronic low back pain, anxiety disorders, cardiac rehabilitation, and stress-related illnesses. His publications, editorial work, and international teaching activities significantly advanced scientific understanding of yoga and promoted its acceptance within rehabilitation medicine and integrative healthcare. His work further demonstrated how traditional concepts such as prāṇa, vāyus, chakras, and Pancha Kosha could be interpreted within a modern biomedical framework while preserving their experiential significance.
CONCLUSION: Dr. Mukund V. Bhole was one of the foremost pioneers of scientific yoga and yoga therapy. His interdisciplinary approach successfully bridged ancient yogic wisdom with modern medical science, establishing a foundation for contemporary research on pranayama, mind–body medicine, and therapeutic yoga. His scientific, educational, and clinical legacy continues to influence yoga researchers, healthcare professionals, and yoga therapists worldwide and remains an important milestone in the evolution of evidence-based integrative medicine.
