Abstract
This chapter details the dramatic events surrounding Pompey, Cleopatra, and Julius Caesar, illustrating the volatile dynamics of power in the ancient Mediterranean world. Pompey flees after his defeat at Pharsalus and seeks refuge in Egypt, where Ptolemy XIII’s advisers betray and assassinate him to curry favor with Caesar. Cleopatra, exiled by her brother’s regents, resourcefully raises an army to reclaim her throne and aligns with Caesar through a bold and legendary personal introduction. Caesar arrives in Egypt, intervenes in the Ptolemaic sibling rivalry, and wages the Alexandrian War to secure Cleopatra’s position while facing fierce opposition from local factions. Finally, the chapter highlights Caesar’s strategic prowess and political maneuvering as he resolves the Egyptian conflict, advances Roman interests, and initiates a complex, enduring relationship with Cleopatra.
