AbstractA major feature of Greek and Roman architecture, a peristyle consists of a central courtyard with porticoes usually on all four sides, stemming from the Greek wordperistylos, meaning “surrounded by columns.” The peristyle was developed in Greek architecture in the course of the fifth centuryBCE, and soon was used for buildings of different functions, such as dining halls, sanctuaries, markets, gymnasia, and magistrates' offices likeprytaneia.
