Poem 10: Semimaru

Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshiga I様様様 Common series of Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige and Kunisada about the famous collection of poems “Hyakunin isshu IIII” (hundred poets with a hundred poems). In the yellow striped field at the top, the tenth poem of the collection, written by Semimaru Im (10th c.). The picture shows the sumo wrestler Nuregami Chōgorō sitting on a rice bale. In his hand he has a pipe and a tobacco bag. He looks at two butterflies who are alluding to the play “Futatsu chōchō” (“Two Butterflies”; alluding to the fact that both names begin with “chō”), which is about Chōgorō and his opponent Hanaregoma Chōkichi. Chōgorō’s garment is decorated with cherry blossoms, Chinese subjects and butterflies.
