Remission of a Tracheal Collapse of a Yorkshire Terrier using Cactus grandiflorus
View through CrossRef
Tracheal collapse (TC) is a common find in small dog breeds, causing different grades of obstruction of the trachea, cough and other symptoms. The treatment includes a combination of various allopathic medications, such as antitussives, corticosteroids, antibiotics, bronchodilators and surgery depending on the collapse degree, generating collateral effects for the patient and cost for the owner. Episodic medications in homeopathy are indicated for those cases in which there is no profound knowledge of the particularities of the individual - for example, new pet adoption - and for a primary help to the patient in need. Cactus grandiflorus is homoeopathic medication with a plant origin whose symptoms are similar to those who have alteration in circular muscle fibers, for example, tracheal ligament, but no findings were found with this medication to treat TC. This study presents a case of episodic Cactus grandiflorus 6cH for a three-months-old Yorkshire with a grade II tracheal collapse (38% reduction of cervicothoracic lumen with deformation) diagnosed by radiographs and clinical symptoms. The puppy was primarily treated with two cycles of salbutamol and codeine for 15 days, and after finishing the second round of allopathic medicine, the homeopathic treatment was started twice a day of Cactus grandiflorus 6cH as an episodic medication, for three months. No symptoms appeared during or after 45 days of the treatment, then the medication was re-started once a day, with the same potency, continuously. Another radiograph of the thoracic area was performed after 3 years from the first one, and a continuous lumen area of the trachea was visualized, with no tracheal deformity evidenced. This is a novel case with the homeopathic use of episodic Cactus grandiflorus used in a grade II tracheal collapse with total reversal of the clinical case and providing homeostasis of the organism, avoiding the clinical sign of the animal.
