A broad yet specific discussion of the theoretical basis and practical problems of current methods in aquatic microbiology. The first two sections address the problem of how to arrive at an accurate enumeration of the bacteria present in aquatic environments. The third section describes and evaluates methods for measuring specific metabolic activities of bacterial populations in aquatic environments.
